GARY SCHLINGHEIDER, BERLIN / germany
In his work, Gary Schlingheider uses a symbiotic combination of painting and sculpture. An examination of the overlap between these two art forms arises. He focuses mainly on color and form. His works are large-format and are characterized by powerful, opaque colors and geometric, reduced shapes. Inspired by art historical greats such as the minimalists Ellsworth Kelly and Frank Stella, Schlingheider explores the boundaries between painting and sculpture in innovative ways.
He studied at the Berlin University of the Arts as a master’s student with Prof. Christine Streuli as well as with Prof. Pia Fries and Prof. Gregory Cumins. His works have been awarded the Manfred Fuchs Prize, the Loth Sculpture Prize from Art Karlsruhe, the Diffring Prize for Sculpture and the Master Student Prize from the President of the Berlin University of the Arts. Since 2023 he has been teaching at the Berlin University of the Arts in the Department of Work in Space.
